Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were socked by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Brewers), 7-3.

Pierce Johnson started this game because scheduled starter Rob Zastryzny got called up to Chicago this morning. It was Johnson’s first start all season. Johnson pitched three innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He did strike out seven batters and he walked just one.

David Garner took the loss in relief. Garner allowed two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. One of the two runs was unearned, however. Garner walked one and struck out one.

Right fielder Bijan Rademacher hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, his seventh of the season. Rademacher was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly.

Chris Dominguez was 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored. Dominguez played first base, right field and he pitched to one batter. He retired him on a ground ball to third base that ended the top of the ninth.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were extinguished by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Twins), 9-8.

Chris Nunn made his Cubs system debut in this game after being signed out of independent ball. It did not go well. Nunn didn’t make it out of the first inning, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning. Nunn struck out one.

This game was so out of hand that catcher Cael Brockmeyer pitched the top of the ninth and he had a perfect 1-2-3 inning. Brockmeyer almost came in line for the win when the Smokies scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to get to within a run. But they couldn’t get the tying run home from second.

Left fielder Charcer Burks was 3 for 5 with a double. He scored three runs and had one RBI.

Third baseman Jason Vosler was 2 for 4 with two doubles and a bases-loaded walk in the ninth. Vosler had two total RBI.

First baseman Yasiel Balaguert was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Shortstop Ozzie Martinez was 2 for 4 with one run batted in and one run scored in that ninth inning.
