Smokies first baseman Yasiel Balaguert was named Southern League Player of the Week. Iowa Cubs catcher Victor Caratini was named to the MLB Pipeline Prospect Team of the Week.
The Iowa Cubs were scratched by the Sacramento River Cats (Giants), 4-2 in 11 innings.
Iowa starter Williams Perez allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He walked four and struck out six.
Justin Hancock tossed two perfect innings in relief of Perez. Justin Grimm allowed one hit, but no runs in his two innings.
Matt Carasiti pitched the top of the 11th inning and took the loss after he was touched for two runs on a hit, three walks and a wild pitch. Carasiti did not have a strikeout.
First baseman Taylor Davis was 2 for 5 with a double. He drove in both Iowa runs.
Right fielder Mark Zagunis was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk. He scored on Davis’ double.

The South Bend Cubs couldn’t get into gear against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays), 3-1.
South Bend starter Matt Swarmer gave up three solo home runs in this game and took the loss. Swarmer allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. Swarmer struck out six and did not walk anyone.
DH Alberto Mineo went 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored the lone South Bend run on a Austin Upshaw sacrifice fly.
Catcher Jhonny Pereda was 3 for 4.
The Eugene Emeralds were stopped by the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 5-4.
Second-round pick Cory Abbott made his pro debut in this game, pitching the first two innings and allowing one run on the only hit he allowed, a solo home run. Abbott struck out three and didn’t walk anyone.
Luis Aquino pitched the bottom of the ninth and gave up a walkoff RBI single. Aquino pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two hits. He struck out one and he walked one batter intentionally.
Right fielder Brandon Hughes was 1 for 1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly. He also stole one base and scored once.
