Congratulations to Zack Short, whom you voted as the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year! Short combined great on-base skills, solid power and good defense at shortstop to be one of the breakout prospects in the system this year.
You still have time to vote for the Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost to the Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers), 2-1 in a seven-inning game. Down East won the best-of-three series 2 games to 0 and were named co-champions of the Carolina League, as the Finals have been cancelled because of Hurricane Irma.
Alec Mills started this game on a rehab assignment and took the loss. Mills allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits over six innings. The difference was a solo home run Mills allowed to Matt Lipka in the third inning. Mills struck out four and did not walk anyone.
The Pelicans only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Zack Short doubled to lead off the inning. He went to third on a single by Willson Contreras and then scored when VImael Machin hit into a double play. Short was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Contreras was the DH in this game and he went 1 for 2 with two walks. One of the two walks was intentional.
This ends the Pelicans season. They were 73-67 this year and won the first half with a 43-27 record. They were only 30-40 in the second half, however.
