The Cubs will have 58 players in spring camp, the entire 40-man roster (now at 39) plus 19 non-roster invitees, announced earlier Thursday. This is a numerical list of all players and members of the coaching staff who’ll appear in camp.
As always, I’ve included the Cubs’ retired numbers so you can see the complete numerical progression, as well as spring-training coaches and instructors (some of the latter will have numbers duplicating an active player, from the number they wore when they played). Non-roster players in italics.
Lastly, I predict that if the Cubs do sign Yu Darvish, Drew Smyly will be changing his number. Darvish wore No. 11 his entire career until he went to the Dodgers. Smyly, who is still recuperating from Tommy John surgery, isn’t likely to appear in a spring game. When the 60-day DL option is available, I’d expect him to be placed on it.
Number changes for players on last year’s team: Victor Caratini from No. 20 to No. 7, and Mark Zagunis from No. 21 to No. 20.
Brandon Morrow has worn the following numbers in his career: 35, 23, 21 and 17 (in chronological order). With those numbers either retired or unavailable, he’s chosen a new one for this year.
As always, I’d like to take a moment for a bit of self-promotion, if you’ll indulge me. If you still don’t have the latest edition of “Cubs By The Numbers” (updated through 2015), here’s your link to buy one!
Pitchers and catchers have their first workout in 20 days and the first spring game is 29 days from today, February 23.
