The Red Sox’ 16-1 annihilation of the Yankees Tuesday night means one thing only: They took a 2-1 lead in the series. The Yankees could just as easily come back and tie the series tonight. I kind of hope they do, because if Boston wins tonight, we don’t have any baseball until Friday.
If the Yankees win we’ll have a Game 5 in this series at Fenway Park Thursday. If the Red Sox win they head home to host the Astros in the ALCS beginning Saturday.
In Game 3, Austin Romine became the second position player ever to pitch in a postseason game (Cliff Pennington did it for the Blue Jays in 2015). Brock Holt became the first player ever to hit for the cycle in a postseason game. So there was entertainment value, if you hung around till the end.
Game time for Yankees/Red Sox: 7 p.m. CT. TV: TBS. Announcers: Brian Anderson and Ron Darling, with reporter Lauren Shehadi.
Pitching matchup:
Rick Porcello (Red Sox) vs. CC Sabathia (Yankees)
