Trading Mike Montgomery: Should the Cubs consider this?

Let me start this off with this statement. I am a big supporter of Mike Montgomery and what he brings to the table. Monty is our Swiss Army Knife. He has proven his value as a reliever and starter. Monty has middle-of-the-rotation upside and is still young. He is valuable to us when injuries hit us (He helped keep the Cubs above water in 2017 when Lester and Hendricks went down). He can go long for us when it comes to relief and provides us starter depth. Plus, he did complete one the Greatest Saves of All Time in Cubs history. So, I would rather he stay as a Cub FOREVER.

I realized that Montgomery has some significant value. He is a 28-year old starter with plenty of control left, which definitely appeals to teams that are starving for pitching. He provide stability for any rotation that is rocked with injuries and poor performances. While trading him weakens our pitching depth, he is not irreplaceable. There are candidates in the Cubs Farm that can fill in that void (Eddie Butler, Alec Mills, Jen-Ho Tseng, Luke Farrell, etc.). While I do think that the reports on the lowly Cubs Farm System have exaggerated how weak our system is, the fact is that it is still far from the powerhouse system that it used to be. While that issue can be resolved with some quality drafting and solid scouting, a trade for Monty could absolutely give our Farm a significant boost in a shorter period of time. There is also Monty's desire to be a starter. Monty is a quality teammate and will do whatever job is given to him. However, Monty wants to start and his role as a swing-man could be negative for his health, as he has stated before.

What should we trade Monty for? And to Whom? The first question is easy. I would try to get significant prospect package. It will not be a Quintana-esque package, but a solid one nonetheless. To who? Well, that is tougher answer. I have heard the Orioles and Blue Jays inquire about Montgomery. Quite frankly, I'm not impressed with what they might offer. The Phillies, on the other hand, are interesting team, as they boast and an elite farm system. The only other teams that interest me as trade partners are the A's, Angels, Braves, and the Twins, as they have pitching needs and decent farm systems (except maybe the Angels, but still).

These would be my offers for the four teams that I listed:

  • Phillies: LHP Mike Montgomery, Cubs: RHP Adonis Media (MLB Pipeline #86) and OF Adam Haseley (MLB Pipeline #95)
  • Braves: LHP Mike Montgomery, Cubs: RHP Ian Anderson (MLB Pipeline #51) and LHP Max Fried (MLB Pipeline #83)
  • A's: LHP Mike Montgomery, Cubs: LHP Jesus Luzardo (MLB Pipeline #60) and LHP Danny Coulombe
  • Twins: LHP Mike Montgomery, Cubs: RHP Fernando Romero (MLB Pipeline #68) and SS Nick Gordon (MLB Pipeline #80)
  • Angels: LHP Mike Montgomery, Cubs: OF Jo Adell (MLB Pipeline #62) and SS Kevin Maitan (MLB Pipeline #87)
So, what do you thinks folks?
