SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — Some of you have made note of my recap headlines the last couple of days.
Perhaps it’s a bit hyperbolic to say that a pitcher who’s gone two innings in an early spring training game is “ready” for Opening Day.
On the other hand, these men are veteran pitchers who certainly know how to prepare for the season, and in a very small sample size they certainly did look very much like they have at their best, with the caveat that neither Jon Lester nor Kyle Hendricks threw at what might be considered their best velocity.
So let’s temper those headlines by saying that they appear to be on the right path in their preparation and so far, spring training this year looks like it’s going as it should.
Here are today’s particulars.
Happ CF, Schwarber LF, Contreras C, La Stella 3B, Caratini DH, Navarro 1B, Zagunis RF, Freeman 2B, Young SS
Tapia LF, LeMahieu 2B, Arenado 3B, Story SS, Tauchman RF, McMahon 1B, Dahl CF, Patterson DH, Wolters C
Yu Darvish was supposed to start for the Cubs today, but was scratched:
No Darvish today. He's been ill. He'll throw a 2 inning bullpen instead. #Cubs— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) March 1, 2018
Darvish will get work in today, just not in a game. Scheduled to start in 5 days. #Cubs— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) March 1, 2018
Looks like Darvish would make 1st Cactus League start vs Dodgers on March 6 (but that's unofficial) #Cubs— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) March 1, 2018
Instead, Alec Mills will get the start for the Cubs.
In the absence of Darvish starting, here’s an interesting article by Jesse Rogers on how Darvish was approached by Theo & Co. and sold on the idea of pitching for the Cubs.
Relievers on the Cubs list today: Brian Duensing, Shae Simmons, Craig Brooks, Anthony Bass, Kyle Ryan and Daniel Camarena.
German Marquez gets the call for the Rockies. Other Rockies pitchers on today’s schedule: Sam Howard, Scott Oberg, Shane Broyles, Jerry Vasto and our old friend Zac Rosscup.
Today’s game is on cubs.com with Len Kasper and Mick Gillispie.
Please note that during spring training, Gameday doesn't usually go pitch-by-pitch as it does during the regular season -- usually, it will update after each at-bat.
Please visit our SB Nation Rockies site Purple Row. If you do go there to interact with Rockies fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
For spring-training games, we'll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today, that will be 2 p.m. CT and 3:30 p.m. CT.
These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page. There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher boxes and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
