SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — Spring training lasts too long, say some, but Joe Maddon would have liked more time this year:
“This is the one time I wish we had one more week and at least four games,” Maddon said. “I’d take that. No matter how bored anyone gets, I would take it. This camp seems to have been a little quicker and kind of disjointed the way the schedule has been presented to us.
“We got our work in, but there are certain things I’d like to do more with.”
It’s true that there were about four days’ less time between the day the full squad reported and the first game than in previous years, likely because of the extra off days added to the regular season schedule.
The schedule the next few days isn’t going to help, either. Here are game times (Central) for the rest of the exhibition season:
Friday: 3:05 CT
Saturday: 8:40 CT and 9:05 CT (split squad)
Sunday: 2:05 CT
Monday: 5:05 CT
Tuesday: 12:05 CT
And there’s a four-plus hour flight to Florida after Sunday’s game and a three-hour time zone change. Yikes. The Cubs will have to adjust pretty quickly to Eastern time by Thursday’s opener — which is at 11:40 a.m. CT.
Here are today’s particulars.
Zobrist LF, Bryant 3B, Rizzo 1B, Contreras C, Russell SS, Heyward RF, Baez 2B, Almora CF, Quintana P
Another lineup that resembles one we might see during the season.
Jackson CF, Panik 2B, McCutchen RF, Posey C, Longoria 3B, Pence LF, Crawford SS, Sandoval 1B, Stratton P
This will be the first Cubs spring game in which pitchers for both teams will bat.
Jose Quintana will start for the Cubs. Cubs relievers tonight: Pedro Strop (making his 2018 Cactus League debut), Anthony Bass and Randy Rosario.
Chris Stratton gets the call for the Giants. Other Giants pitchers tonight: Mark Melancon, Hunter Strickland and Josh Osich.
Tonight’s game is on 670 The Score with Len Kasper and Ron Coomer. TV coverage is being provided by the Giants network NBC Sports Bay Area and will be available on MLB.tv. It will also be on MLB Network on a one-hour delay at 10 p.m. CT.
Please note that during spring training, Gameday doesn't usually go pitch-by-pitch as it does during the regular season -- usually, it will update after each at-bat.
Please visit our SB Nation Giants site McCovey Chronicles. If you do go there to interact with Giants fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
For spring-training games, we'll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For tonight, that will be 9 p.m. CT and 10:30 p.m. CT.
These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page. There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher boxes and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
