Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: April 15

The weather is still a problem, but the teams that did play won big.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs caged the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) 9-4.

Starter Zach Hedges put the I-Cubs behind early, giving up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to give Memphis a 3-2 lead. Hedges pitched five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Hedges walked two and did not record a strikeout.

Rob Zastryzny relieved Hedges and got the win when Iowa stormed back with four runs in the eighth inning. Zastryzny pitched two scoreless innings and surrendered just one hit. He struck out one and walked one.

Second baseman David Bote hit his second home run in as many days when he connected for a solo home run in the third inning. Bote was 3 for 5 with a triple, the home run and two runs batted in. He scored three times.

Right fielder Mark Zagunis connected for his first home run of the season in the fourth inning. It came with the bases empty. Zagunis also connected for a two-run, bases-loaded double in the eight that gave the I-Cubs the lead for good. Zagunis was 3 for 5 with a double, the home run and three RBI. Zagunis scored two runs.

Left fielder Ryan Court entered the game as part of a double-switch with Zastryzny and went 2 for 2 with his first home run on the season, a solo blast to lead off the ninth.

Tennessee Smokies

Rained out. The Smokies were losing 4-3 in the third inning when the rain came. It will be made up at a later date yet to be determined.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans won their second-straight game with a 9-4 win over the Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers).

Starter Alex Lange went four innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Lange walked two and struck out three.

Lange was relieved by Tyler Peyton, who was awarded the win because Lange didn’t go five innings. Peyton surrendered just one run on three hits over three innings. He walked three and struck out two.

DH Wladimir Galindo hit his first home run of the season with a man on in the third inning. Galindo went 2 for 5 with three RBI and he scored two runs.

First baseman Tyler Alamo made it 9-2 when he connected for a three-run home run in the fourth inning. It was his second home run this season. Alamo went 2 for 5.

Left fielder Kevonte Mitchell was 3 for 4 with a walk.

South Bend Cubs

Rained out at Lake County again. The two teams will play a doubleheader on both May 14 and May 16 to make up for the games they missed this weekend.
