Good news, folks. He hasn’t been activated yet, but Cubs top prospect Adbert Alzolay arrived in Des Moines today. He’s expected to start against Nashville on Thursday.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were too quiet against the Nashville Sounds (Athletics), 3-2.
Alec Mills started and took the loss. He gave up three runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. One of the three runs was unearned. He walked four and struck out four.
Michael Roth kept the I-Cubs in the game by not allowing a run the rest of the way. He pitched the final 4.2 innings and gave up three hits. He walked three and struck out four.
Right fielder Mark Zagunis went 2 for 3 with an RBI double in the fifth inning. He also walked once (of course).
Center fielder Wynton Bernard was 2 for 4.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies devoured the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 6-1 in 10 innings.
Smokies starter Duncan Robinson pitched the first six innings and gave up just one run on six hits. He struck out four and walked no one.
After James Norwood pitched two innings without allowing a hit or a run, Daury Torrez pitched the ninth and tenth inning and got the win. Torrez allowed just one baserunner, a infield single with two out in the tenth. He did not strike anyone out.
Trent Giambrone broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the tenth with a one-out double. That opened the gates to a five-run inning for the Smokies. Giambrone was 2 for 4 and he scored later in the inning.
Giambrone and center fielder Trey Martin executed a double steal in the tenth inning. Martin went 2 for 3 with a walk and he scored later that inning.
First baseman Yasiel Balaguert had a two-run single to cap off the five-run tenth. Balaguert was 2 for 5 and he had an RBI double in the fourth inning, so he had three total RBI.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were dusted by the Buies Creek Astros, 6-2.
The Pelicans wasted a great start from Keegan Thompson, who did not allow a run over the first five innings. He surrendered just three hits. Thompson struck out four and did not walk anyone.
Ryan Kellogg relieved Thompson and got tattooed for four runs in three hits over 1.2 innings. Kellogg walked four batters, hit one and struck out two as he took the loss.
The Pelicans only had three hits tonight. Left fielder Kevonte Mitchell was 1 for 2 with a double and a walk. He scored the first run of the game after walking to lead off the fifth inning and drove home the other Pelicans’ run in the top of the ninth.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were fried by the Dayton Dragons (Reds), 3-2. The loss ends the Cubs five-game winning streak.
Another great start went to waste tonight as Cory Abbott allowed just one unearned run over his five-inning start. Abbott allowed only one hit and walked only one while striking out five.
Yapson Gomez pitched the bottom of the eighth and allowed two runs thanks to two wild pitches. Gomez was awarded the loss after giving up one hit and one walk in the inning. He did not strike anyone out.
First baseman Jared Young hit his second home run of the season with the bases empty in the third inning. Young also doubled in a 2 for 4 night. Young scored both of South Bend’s runs.
Shortstop Yeiler Peguero was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
