Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs dropped the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 5-3.
Duane Underwood Jr. pitched 6.2 innings without allowing a run. He gave up just three hits. Underwood walked three and struck out three.
The I-Cubs had a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth when Dillon Maples took the mound. Maples walked four of the five batters he faced, only getting one batter out on a soft liner. Shea Simmons was then summoned to get the save, and the first batter Simmons faced hit a two-run single to make if 5-3. After Simmons struck out the next batter, he walked Terrance Gore to load the bases and put the winning run on first base before inducing Billy Burns to hit a soft grounder to end the game and give Simmons his second save.
Shortstop Mike Freeman went 2 for 4 with a walk and one RBI. Freeman also stole one base.
Left fielder Chesny Young was 1 for 1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly. Young scored twice.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies boiled the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins), 7-2.
Starter Michael Rucker gave up just one hit and two unearned runs over his dominating six innings of work. Rucker walked one, hit one batter and struck out nine.
Third baseman Trent Giambrone hit a three-run home run in the second inning, his second blast of the season. Giambrone later added an RBI triple in the seventh to give him a final line for the night of 2 for 5 with 4 RBI. He scored twice.
Shortstop Zack Short was 2 for 4 with a walk. Short scored one run and drove in one.
Catcher Will Remillard was 2 for 4 with one run batted in.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans grounded the Buies Creek Astros, 9-6.
Matt Swarmer pitched the first five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out a career-high nine batters.
Jordan Minch got the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Minch allowed two hits, but no runs. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.
First baseman Austin Upshaw gave the Pelicans and early lead with a three-run triple in the bottom of the first inning. Upshaw also doubled in a 2 for 4 game. He scored one run.
Center fielder Connor Myers was 2 for 3 with a walk and he scored two times.
Second baseman Andruw Monasterio was 2 for 5 with a double and two runs batted in. He also scored one run.
Catcher Jhonny Pereda was 2 for 5 with one run batted and and one run scored.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs toppled the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners), 5-1.
Brendon Little got his second win with five scoreless innings tonight. Little allowed just two hits, although he did walk four while striking out five.
Brian Glowicki pitched the final two innings and got the save. Glowicki did make it interesting as he gave up a solo home run in the eighth inning and then loaded the bases with only one out in the ninth on three singles. But Glowicki then struck out the next batter and got a fly to right to end the game. Glowicki had three strikeouts and one walk.
Catcher Miguel Amaya was 1 for 2 with a double and two walks. Amaya had one RBI.
Third baseman Yeiler Peguero was 2 for 4.
