Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader with the Round Rock Express (Rangers), losing game one 11-4 and winning the second one 6-4.
Adbert Alzolay started game one and he did not have a good outing, allowing five runs on a pair of two-run home runs and a solo home run. He allowed nine hits total over his 4.2 innings. Alzolay struck out two and walked one.
Rob Zastryzny then allowed six runs in his one inning of work, which is less than ideal.
Left fielder Stephen Bruno was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored one run and had one run batted in.
Shortstop Mike Freeman was 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored in game one.
Jen-Ho Tseng started game two and he got the win, although not without allowing four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Anthony Bass threw the final 1.2 innings and got his second save. Bass allowed two hits and a walk, but no runs. He did not strike anyone out.
First baseman Efren Navarro was a perfect 3 for 3 in game two. He scored once and had two RBI. Navarro now has an 11-game hitting streak.
Left fielder Chesny Young was 2 for 4 and scored once.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were extinguished by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Twins), 6-2.
Thomas Hatch started and took the loss after he surrendered five runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings. Two of those hits were home runs. Hatch walked three and struck out only one.
Both of the Smokies runs came on a two-run home run by Trey Martin in the fifth inning. It was his fourth home run this year. Martin went 2 for 4.
Right fielder Jeffrey Baez was 2 for 4 and scored on the Martin home run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Travel day. They play in Wilmington on Tuesday.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs split a double header with the Lake County Captains (Indians), losing game one 3-2 and winning the second game 11-0.
In game one, starter Cory Abbot allowed just two runs on just two hits over five innings. One hit was a solo home run. Abbott struck out seven and walked just three.
Brendan King gave up a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to Oscar Gonzalez. That was the only hit King allowed over 1.2 innings. (Yes, the Cubs allowed three total hits in game one and two were home runs.) King walked one and struck out two.
Both of South Bend’s runs in game one came on a two-run home run by first baseman Jared Young. It came in the third inning and was Young’s fourth home run of the season. He was 1 for 3.
Shortstop Jhonny Bethencourt was 2 for 4 with a double and he scored on the Young home run.
In game two, Erich Uelmen had a great start, allowing just four hits over six scoreless innings. Uelmen struck out six and walked just one.
Left fielder Brandon Hughes got the Cubs on the board with at two-run home run in the second inning. It was Hughes’ first homer on the year. Hughes was 2 for 3 with a double, the home run, a walk and three total RBI. Hughes scored three runs.
DH Austin Filiere made it 5-0 with a three-run home run in the third. Filiere’s home run was his third of the year. Filiere was 1 for 3 with a walk. He scored twice.
Center fielder Zach Davis was a perfect 2 for 2 with two walks and two steals. He scored twice.
Bethencourt played third base in game two and was 2 for 4 with a double again. He also hit a sac fly in game two for three total RBI.
Right fielder Nelson Velazquez was 2 for 4.
