The Cubs have played the fewest games of anyone in the N.L. Central (in fact, through Thursday’s games, they are tied for the fewest games of anyone in the entire National League with the Mets).
This means that despite the current 3½-game deficit in the division, the Cubs are only one games down in the loss column to the first-place Brewers — and they’re 7-1 against Milwaukee.
Feel better now?
Here are today’s particulars.

Kyle Hendricks, RHP vs. Derek Holland, LHP
Kyle Hendricks had a bit of a rough outing the last time out in Cincinnati, but he is still having a solid year, and has gone at least six innings in six of his nine starts.
He faced the Giants twice last year and threw 11x innings and allowed three runs, with 10 strikeouts. That sounds good, but one of those starts was seven strong innings allowing two runs, in the other he was pulled in the fifth having given up only one run.
Brandon Belt is 5-for-10 with a home run off Kyle; several other Giants have hit him well, but in very small sample sizes.
Derek Holland had a bad year for the White Sox last year and has been mostly bad for the Giants this year, apparently still in the major leagues because he’s lefthanded. He’s been a bit better in May (4.03 ERA) than in April (5.76 ERA), but neither of those is that good.
Holland last faced the Cubs in April 2013 and I pass that boxscore along mostly for amusement value, obviously only Anthony Rizzo remains from that Cubs team. I remember that game well, a miserably cold night, the next day was rained out, and the day after that was played in front of about 4,000 people on a drizzly, cold day.
It’s warmer now.
Anyway, the only current Cub Holland has faced more than a handful of times is Ben Zobrist (8-for-28, .286, three doubles, a triple, a home run).
Today’s game is on ABC7 Chicago. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Chicago and San Francisco markets).

The 2018 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2017. Here's how it works.
You'll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game's StoryStream as noted above.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
