The Cubs go for two in a row over the Giants.

Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday notes:

  • The Cubs are 11-2 against the Giants at Wrigley Field since the beginning of 2015.
  • The Cubs’ team OBP of .340 leads the National League and is just one point behind the Yankees (.341) for the major-league lead.
  • The Cubs have drawn 184 walks this year, an average of 3.91 per game. That’s a pace for 634, which would be third-best in franchise history.
  • Dating to last season, Brandon Morrow’s 67⅔ straight innings without allowing a homer is the longest active streak in the majors.
  • Kris Bryant ranks second in the N.L. with a .418 OBP and .984 OPS.
  • Happy birthday to Ben Zobrist, who turns 37 today.

Also, a note on the uniforms being worn this weekend:

Here are today’s particulars.

Jose Quintana, RHP vs. Chris Stratton, RHP

At last, Jose Quintana showed us the form in his most recent start that he didn’t have all year except against the Brewers. Seven one-hit innings vs. the Reds last Saturday was his best outing of the year. Also, last five starts: 2.20 ERA, 1.256 WHIP. We’d take that for the rest of the year.

Last time Q faced the Giants was August 8, 2017 in San Francisco: six innings, three earned runs. If the Cubs offense can get going, we’d probably take that, too.

Chris Stratton. He threw pretty well in April, but let’s look (as we did for Q) at his last five starts: 8.59 ERA, 2.182 (!) WHIP, six home runs in 22 innings.

Yikes. That’s pretty bad.

Stratton has never faced the Cubs or anyone on the active roster.

Yikes. That never seems to work out well for the Cubs. Beware this matchup.

Today’s game is on Fox-TV (regional — coverage map). Announcers: Len Kasper and Tom Verducci. A reminder, if you are a MLB.tv or MLB Extra Innings subscriber and this game is not on the Fox station in your market, you can still watch via one of those services.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Giants site McCovey Chronicles. If you do go there to interact with Giants fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.

The 2018 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2017. Here's how it works.

You'll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game's StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
