Before this evening’s home game with the Giants, the Cubs announced that they have placed starting pitcher Yu Darvish on the disabled list with right triceps tendonitis. They have recalled left-handed pitcher Randy Rosario from Triple-A Iowa.
The move on Darvish is retroactive to May 23. so he’s eligible to come off the disabled list on June 2. He will definitely miss his next start, which was scheduled for tomorrow night. Instead, Tyler Chatwood will start on Sunday night on four days rest.
The starter for Monday’s night’s game has yet to be announced, but it is likely the Cubs will make another roster move before then. It would be Duane Underwood Jr. turn in the Iowa rotation that night, but Luke Farrell could also be available.
Darvish has been disappointing in his first season with the Cubs, posting a 1-3 record with a 4.95 ERA. However, he was very good in his last start, picking up his first win of the year after allowing just two hits and one run in six innings against the Reds.
This is Darvish’s second trip to the DL after having been placed on it earlier this month with the flu.
This is Rosario’s second stint with the major league club this season, having previously thrown two scoreless innings in game one of the doubleheader on May 19 against the Reds. For Iowa this season, he boasts a 0.47 ERA after having allowed just one earned run in 19.1 innings.
