Cubs lose! But there’s still the possibility of Meatloaf-a-roni, if Tyler doesn’t pull a Chatwood. Yu Darvish is afraid of being booed™ has gone to the DL and will have an MRI performed. Chris Gimenez is with the big club, and Randy Rosario is back, too. Victor Caratini could probably use some regular at-bats to stay sharp — that move makes sense to me on that basis. Efren Navarro was DFA’d...didn’t really expect that.

Some of those balls hit late were barreled pretty good. They just didn’t fall. Perhaps that evens out in the rubber game. Not a lot of news today — most everyone wrote about Darvish going to the DL, and there’s not a lot of postgame interview copy available at 11 pm Arizona time. So feel free to discuss these developments among yourselves. Or not. As always * means autoplay on, or annoying ads, or both (directions to remove for Firefox and Chrome).

Cubs news and notes:

  • Carrie Muskat (*): Jose Quintana chased; Kyle Schwarber, Javier Baez homer in loss. “Maddon lifted Quintana after he threw 83 pitches over 4 1/3 innings.”
  • Phil Rogers (Chicago Tribune* {$}): Cubs, Quintana feel the heat during 5-4 loss to Giants. “We’re not scoring a ton of runs,” Maddon said. “I wanted to keep this as close as possible.”
  • Paul Sullivan (Chicago Tribune* {$}): With Darvish on the DL, Cubs rotation will have to find its bearings without him. “We haven’t really hit our stride yet,” Theo Epstein said. “But there’s a lot of talent in the rotation.”
  • David Just (Chicago Sun-Times*): Cubs call up backup catcher Gimenez, send Caratini down for playing time. “Not playing Caratini enough really bums me out,” Maddon said. “It bothers me a lot. And he needs to play. We got to get him out playing again.”
  • Tony Andracki (NBC Sports Chicago*): Explaining the roster move as Cubs switch backup catchers. “It has nothing to do with [catching Darvish],” Maddon said.
  • Tommy Birch (Des Moines Register {$}): Caratini coming back to the Iowa Cubs. “He’ll help work with a young group of talented arms on Iowa’s roster...”
  • Nick Vanderah (isportsweb): Albert Almora Jr. is making the most of his opportunity. “Almora has turned into a guy the Chicago Cubs need to have in the lineup every day.”

Food for thought:

  • Josh Gabbatiss (The Independent): DNA shape changed by scientists to create tiny machines and computers. “Structures can be employed as building blocks to create nanobots and basic computing systems...”
  • Rafi Letzter (Live Science): Massive ice highways found hiding under Antarctica. “A series of mountain ranges divide east and west in Antarctica.”
  • Mike Wall ( Decoding alien messages could be the biggest citizen-science project ever. “An experiment performed recently...shows why we may need the power of the human hive-mind.”

Here’s a musical nugget for your Sunday: Enjoy immoderately.
