Cubs roster move: Carl Edwards Jr. to DL, Cory Mazzoni recalled

This isn’t good.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Carl Edwards Jr. has been one of the Cubs’ most reliable relievers this season.

Thus, this definitely qualifies as bad news:

Edwards’ last appearance was Tuesday night at PNC Park against the Pirates, where he threw a scoreless inning in relief of Jon Lester. CJ had been hit pretty hard mid-month, but over his last six appearances covering six innings, he allowed no runs and struck out eight, and there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with his velocity, so perhaps this is just precautionary.

Cory Mazzoni was called up from Triple-A Iowa earlier this year and made one appearance, a scoreless inning against the Marlins on May 7. At Iowa so far this season, Mazzoni has a 2.08 ERA and 1.062 WHIP in 14 appearances covering 21⅓ innings. He’s walked five and struck out 22. It’s a bit of a surprise that Mazzoni has been recalled; the Cubs could have brought Justin Hancock back, since this is an injury and thus the 10-day option rule doesn’t apply.

This will mean other relievers will have to step up, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt if Kyle Hendricks would go deep into tonight’s game. A full game preview for the game tonight will be coming up shortly at 4 p.m. CT.
