Cubs roster move: Cory Mazzoni to Iowa, Anthony Bass recalled

The Cubs have another bullpen reinforcement.

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Cory Mazzoni has made seven appearances in relief for the Cubs, most of them decent. He’s posted a 1.17 ERA and 1.304 WHIP in 7⅔ innings.

The Iowa shuttle continues, though, as Mazzoni heads back to Des Moines and righthander Anthony Bass will make his Cubs debut:

Bass was once a pretty good pitching prospect for the Padres and made 15 starts for them in 2012. He last appeared in the majors for the Rangers in 2017 (after a year pitching for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan) and was signed last December as a free agent by the Cubs. He’s 30 and has a decent arm, and at Triple-A Iowa this year he’s posted a 2.28 ERA and 1.225 WHIP in 18 appearances covering 23⅔ innings. He’s walked six and struck out 20.

He also made seven appearances for the Cubs in spring training covering 6⅔ innings, posting a 1.35 ERA and 1.650 WHIP.

Eddie Butler’s injury must be more serious than first thought, as he last pitched April 19 and there’s been no news about him in the six weeks since. Hopefully, he’ll be able to return later this season.
