Just in case Javier Baez decides to do something special off Chris Sale in the first inning tonight... here’s an interesting factoid:
Leadoff Home Runs in #AllStarGame history
— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) July 17, 2018
1934 Frankie Frisch
1942 Lou Boudreau
1965 Willie Mays
1977 Joe Morgan
1989 Bo Jackson
2015 Mike Trout
And a note: Even though this game is at Nationals Park, the American League is the “home” team. The leagues no longer alternate as host sites, but they do still alternate as the “home” team, and the N.L. was the home team in 2017.
Here are today’s particulars.

It’s the third All-Star start for both pitchers, and for Scherzer, it’s in his home ballpark. Scherzer looks happy about the whole thing. Sale doesn’t. I don’t know whether that will have any impact on their performance in the game.
In an extremely small sample size, Javier Baez is 1-for-3 against Sale. It’s worth recalling that Kris Bryant homered off Sale in the first inning in the 2016 ASG in San Diego.
Today’s game is on Fox. Announcers: Joe Buck, John Smoltz and Ken Rosenthal.

This will be the only thread for tonight’s game. Enjoy, and discuss amongst yourselves.
