Strong starting pitching leads to just one win for the top five Cubs minor league clubs

Duane Underwood Jr. made a solid statement to make his next start in the major leagues tonight. Iowa still lost.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Fresno Grizzlies (Astros), 2-1.

Starter Duane Underwood Jr. allowed just one run on seven hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The loss went to Rob Zastryzny, who came in to pitch the sixth inning and allowed a run on two hits and a walk. Zastryzny did not strike out anyone.

The I-Cubs only had four hits in this game and struck out 15 times. Ryan Court singled in the 8th inning to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Court was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were subjugated by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 6-4.

Keegan Thompson allowed two runs on six hits over the first five innings. Thompson struck out seven and walked two.

Once again, the loss went to a reliever. In this case Jordan Minch allowed a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Barons a 4-3 lead. The final line on Minch was two runs on two hits and a walk over 1.2 innings. Minch struck out two.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans split a doubleheader with the Carolina Mudcats (Brewers), losing game one 5-4 in eight innings and winning the second game 2-0.

Tyson Miller put in five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. He walked three and struck out five.

After the Pelicans scored once in the top of the eighth, the Mudcats scored twice off reliever Tyler Peyton in the bottom of the innings. Peyton allowed three hits in the two-thirds of an inning he pitched.

Right fielder Roberto Caro hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, his second on the season and his first for the Pelicans. Caro has been extremely hot lately and tonight he was 2 for 4 with three total RBI. Caro is batting .444 over his last ten games.

Third baseman Wladimir Galindo went 2 for 3 with a double.

In the second game, Erick Leal and Jose Paulino combined for a two-hitter. Leal pitched the first five innings and allowed one hit. He struck out eight and walked no one.

Paulino pitched the other two innings and surrendered one single. He struck out two and walked no one.

Center fielder Jose Gutierrez was a perfect 2 for 2 with a double and a walk. He scored both Pelicans runs.

South Bend Cubs

Off day.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds were trapped by the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 4-3 in ten innings.

Riley Thompson started and threw three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. He struck out two and did not walk anyone.

Faustino Carrera piggybacked with Thompson and allowed just one run on three hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Sean Berry took the loss. He pitched just the top of the tenth inning and allowed two runs on one hit. He walked three, but two of those were intentional. One of the runs was unearned.

Left fielder Grant Ferrell went 3 for 5 with two RBI.

Shortstop Levi Jordan went 2 for 5.

Second baseman Luis Diaz went 2 for 4.

AZL Cubs

Cubs 1 beat the Diamondbacks, 18-3.

Cubs 2 beat the Reds, 4-1.
