Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 27

Just Iowa won tonight.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs declawed the Sacramento River Cats (Giants), 4-2.

Starter Trevor Clifton got the win after giving up two runs on six hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Dillon Maples retired the final four River Cats batters in a row, striking out three of them for the save.

Right fielder Mark Zagunis hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his fifth of the season. He also had an RBI double in the eighth inning. Zagunis was 3 for 4 on the night.

Left fielder Bijan Rademacher went 2 for 4 and scored one run.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were extinguished by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-2.

Thomas Hatch pitched the first five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. Hatch struck out seven and walked three. He also hit one batter.

Wyatt Short gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, including two-run home run, to take the loss. Short’s final line was three runs on five hits over 1.1 innings. Short struck out one and did not walk anyone.

DH Ian Rice hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. It was his sixth this season. Rice was 1 for 4.

Left fielder Charcer Burks was 1 for 2 with two walks. He scored the other Smokies run.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were scratched by the Lynchburg Hillcats (Indians), 4-3.

The Pelicans wasted a terrific start by Cory Abbott. Abbott pitched 6.2 innings and was charged with one run on four hits. He walked just one and struck out ten.

Jhon Romero had a bad night. He came in for Abbott in the seventh inning with one man on and gave up a triple and a double on the first two pitches he threw, tying up the game at 2-2. Romero stayed in the game and allowed two more runs in the eighth for the loss. Romero’s final line was three runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings. Romero walked one and struck out one.

Second baseman Andruw Monasterio went 3 for 4 with an RBI double. He also stole a base.

Left fielder Jared Young went 2 for 4 with a walk and one RBI.

Shortstop Aramis Ademan was 2 for 4 and was hit by a pitch. He scored twice.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were hammered by the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays), 5-2.

Brendon Little started and took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over five innings. Little walked two and struck out two.

DH Delvin Zinn went 2 for 5 with a stolen base and one run scored.

Eugene Emeralds.

The Eugene Emeralds lost to the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), 5-1.

Jose Albertos didn’t make it out of the first inning. Albertos allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Albertos struck out both batters that he retired.

Left fielder Grant Fennell had two doubles in a 3 for 4 night.

Right fielder Jonathan Sierra and third baseman Jake Slaughter both went 2 for 4 with a double.

The Ems had nine hits including five doubles, but went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

AZL Cubs

Cubs 1 lost to the Brewers, 7-1.

Cubs 2 lost to the Reds, 9-1.
