Well, that was fun. Knew there was something off with that ump — I was making remarks to that effect on that good old farcebook, also referring to a possible payor in my comments, given the interesting strike zone he was using. That said, I hope Chris Guccione is okay. I just would prefer him not to be at the plate. Jerry Meals, the crew chief, had a more consistent zone. But then Jerry was behind the plate for Kerry Wood’s 20-strikeout game.

The Cubs bats were okay. Cole Hamels looked good in his Cubs debut. Al will have the details in his recap. As always * means autoplay on, or annoying ads, or both (directions to remove for Firefox and Chrome).

Cubs catcher Willson Contreras on catching Cole Hamels’ debut tonight against the Pirates: “I hope I don’t use the six mound visits in the first six innings. He said he’ll step off if we’re having problems. I think it will be a lot like catching (Jon) Lester. Same kind of stuff.” — Jesse Rogers.
