Final off-day of the season.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies toppled the Jackson Generals (Diamondbacks), 4-1.
Starter Thomas Hatch gave up just one run over six innings and it came on a solo home run in the sixth. Hatch gave up five hits total. He struck out six, walked one and hit one batter. It was his eighth win of the season.
Zach Hedges pitched the ninth inning and got the save. The first batter he faced reached on an error, but he retired the next three in order. He did not strike anyone out.
After the Generals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, catcher Erick Castillo gave the lead to the Smokies with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. It was just his second home run of the season and that’s a new career-high for him. Castillo went 1 for 3.
First baseman Yasiel Balaguert went 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning. He also scored on the Castillo home run.
Second baseman Trent Giambrone went 0 for 1 with three walks and a steal. He scored on the Balaguert double.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
It’s their final off-day of the season as well.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs brought down the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 4-3.
Starter Erling Moreno was terrific for six scoreless innings and got his second win of the season. Moreno gave up four hits. He walked four and struck out four.
Brian Glowicki came on in the eighth inning with one out and a man on second after Ben Hecht had already surrendered three runs. Glowicki retired the next two batters and then pitched the ninth to get his 17th save. The only baserunner he allowed was a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth. Glowicki struck out one.
Center fielder Brandon Hughes went 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored twice.
Second baseman Delvin Zinn was also 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He had one run batted in.
Right fielder Jose Gutierrez went 2 for 4 with a steal.
Eugene Emeralds
The Eugene Emeralds tripped against the Hillsboro Hops (Diamondbacks), 2-1.
Brailyn Marquez took the hard-luck loss tonight, allowing two runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings. Marquez struck out six and did not walk anyone.
The Ems only run came on a solo home run by catcher Eric Gonzalez in the third inning. It was Gonzalez’s second home run of the year and first with Eugene. He was 2 for 3.
AZL Cubs
Cubs 1 beat the Reds, 10-6 in the completion of a game suspended on August 8.
Cubs 1 beat the Reds 6-5 in eight innings in game two.
Cubs 2 were off.
