Can’t beat fun at the old ballpark! Alec Mills looked good, Daniel Murphy and David Bote went yard, and the Cubs were victorious.
That ain’t no Tru-Link fence!

- Patrick Mooney (The Athletic {$}): Cole Hamels and Daniel Murphy fit right into a Cubs team that knows how to roll with the punches. “there’s a lot of organizations that can give a punch. But few can take one the way this team and this organization can and give one back,” Murphy said.
- Jesse Rogers (ESPN): Hamels has turned his season around since joining the Cubs. “That’s what we set out to do,” Hamels said. Cam Ellis chimes in.
- Patrick Mooney (The Athletic {$}): Perception vs. reality: Yu Darvish’s mixed emotions in Year 1 with Cubs. “It’s really hard to think about next year at this point,” Darvish said.
- Zack Moser (Wrigleyville-Baseball Prospectus): What is wrong with Willson Contreras? “Contreras has decided to hit the ball in the air more, and he’s hitting the ball softer overall as a result.”
- Heather Cichowski (A Plus): Boy gets surprised by his favorite Cubs player, but it’s tough to tell who’s the bigger fan. Daniel Rodriguez is a big baseball fan and calls Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras his “best friend.”
- Carrie Muskat (MLB.com*): Bote’s walk-off HR in 10th lifts Cubs over Reds. “Rookie knocks second game-winner of month; Daniel Murphy hits first homer with new club.” Sahadev Sharma ({$}) goes deeper.
- Carrie Muskat (MLB.com*): Anthony Rizzo’s season jump-started at leadoff spot. “Struggling slugger and Maddon had heart-to-heart talk in late April.” Phil Rogers has more words about this.
- Tony Andracki (NBC Sports Chicago*): It’s getting harder and harder for the Cubs to find time to rest Ben Zobrist, even if he needs it. “...it’s hard to imagine Zobrist out of the lineup in any sort of important game for the Cubs.”
- Jon Greenberg (The Athletic {$}): ‘I would hope that you would root for the Cubs’: Murphy addresses his past words. “I want to believe a lot of us are getting more empathetic about people who have been historically marginalized,” Greenberg writes.
- Brett Taylor (Bleacher Nation): Kolten Wong says if he doesn’t win the 2B Gold Glove “there is something wrong with it”. “It needs to be somebody who deserves it instead of a publicity contest,” he said.
- Evan Altman (Cubs Insider): Jed Hoyer says Addison Russell ‘Probably shouldn’t have been playing’ through finger, shoulder, hip injuries. “When it comes to Addi, he’s been playing so banged up,” Hoyer said.”
- Mark Gonzales (Chicago Tribune* {$}): Cubs’ Kris Bryant will wear cleats to promote 2020 Olympics. “The cleats, made by adidas, are open for bidding...”
- Evan Altman (Cubs Insider): Bryant set for ‘Heavy Day of BP,’ potential last step before rehab assignment. “Provided all goes well with the rehab, Bryant will likely rejoin the Cubs by the end of the month and then be activated when rosters expand in September.”
- Michael Clair (Cut Four): Bryzzo proved they’re best friends with their bats. “After about the third grade, it’s tough to tell people you’re best friends.” Sean Sears adds a few words about their bromance.
- Patrick Mooney (The Athletic {$}): ‘I feel almost like a Catholic priest at times.’ “Just as Father Joe Maddon predicted, Anthony Rizzo and the Cubs are taking off again.” Just make sure everyone gets their exorcise and rest.
