There’s not a lot more that can be said about this rain-delayed series, so without further ado, here are today’s particulars, but not before a note that Joe Maddon mentioned Tuesday:
Maddon: "I was already writing out tomorrow's lineup against Vargas because it's going to be an interesting lineup tomorrow, so don't miss it. It's an opportunity to give guys days off of their feet in 23 consecutive."— Tony Andracki (@TonyAndracki23) August 28, 2018
And, a reminder that a Suspended Game thread will post at 11:55 a.m. CT. It will appear in the Tuesday StoryStream and the Chicago Cubs Game Threads section at the bottom of the front page. Use that for the suspended game; a complete set of game threads for the scheduled game will post later.
Here are the particulars for the scheduled game.
Alec Mills, RHP vs. Jason Vargas, LHP
Alec Mills was just outstanding in his start last Friday against the Reds. He doesn’t throw with great velocity, mostly just touching 90, but locates well. He also mixed up his pitches in that start, and also worked quickly. Fielders like that.
Mills was rewarded for that by being given, at least for now, a spot in the rotation. He has never faced the Mets or anyone on their roster. Hopefully, that will be an advantage for him.
If you look at Jason Vargas’ overall numbers for this year: 6.96 ERA, 1.608 WHIP, 14 home runs allowed in just 64⅔ innings, you might think this would be an easy win for the Cubs.
Don’t think that way. The Cubs don’t. And in Vargas’ last start, August 24 vs. the Nationals, he threw six shutout innings. His last three starts: 2.08 ERA, 0.981 WHIP, only three walks in 17⅓ innings.
Vargas last faced the Cubs in 2013. The only Cubs who have faced him are Anthony Rizzo (0-for-6) and Ben Zobrist (12-for-29, four doubles, a home run).
Also, FWIW the Cubs are 19-9 vs. lefthanded starters this year.
Today’s game is on NBC Sports Chicago. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Chicago and New York markets).
Please visit our SB Nation Mets site Amazin’ Avenue. If you do go there to interact with Mets fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
The 2018 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2017. Here’s how it works.
You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
