An 11-game road trip begins tonight with this makeup for the May 17 rainout at SunTrust Park.
When the Cubs return to Wrigley Field September 10 to face the Brewers, we should know a lot more about how the postseason is shaping up. Speaking of the Brewers, they defeated the Reds in 11 innings Thursday afternoon to move into a temporary tie with the Cardinals for second place in the N.L. Central, 4½ games behind the Cubs.
- Tonight’s game is the second of a three-day stretch in which the Cubs play in a different city on three consecutive days (Wednesday in Chicago, Thursday in Atlanta, Friday in Philadelphia). The last time the Cubs did this was June 21-23, 2009. They defeated the Indians 6-2 at home, played a makeup game, also in Atlanta, the next night (2-0 loss) and then began a series in Detroit on the third night (lost 5-4).
- The Cubs are 7-2 so far in a stretch of 23 games in 23 days that began August 21 in Detroit.
- Anthony Rizzo is hitting .365 (35-for-96) with seven doubles, seven homers, 17 RBI, 13 walks and an 1.103 OPS in August. His .446 on-base percentage this month is second in the N.L., trailing only Justin Turner, while Rizzo’s 1.103 OPS ranks third behind David Peralta (1.186) and Turner (1.184).
- Daniel Murphy is the first position player to have the Cubs win each of his first seven career games with the team (minimum one plate appearance per game) since 1934 when Chuck Klein and Tuck Stainback helped the Cubs to a 7-0 start. (H/T: STATS Inc.)

Here are today’s particulars.
Mike Montgomery, LHP vs. Mike Foltynewicz, RHP
Mike Montgomery has been on the DL with a minor shoulder issue and last pitched on August 11, an inning of relief against the Nationals. He threw very well in his first few starts, then had a few not-so-great ones, and his last two starts were very good (11⅓ innings, one earned run).
He has two relief appearances vs. the Braves this year for a total of three scoreless innings. Current Braves are hitting .210 (13-for-62) against him with two home runs (Ender Inciarte, Adam Duvall).
After three uninspiring seasons in Atlanta, Mike Foltynewicz has finally broken out with a fine season: 2.67 ERA, 1.131 WHIP, 3.4 bWAR. That includes a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts against the Nationals. He has a 1.38 ERA and 0.918 WHIP in five starts in August.
He started against the Cubs May 15 in Atlanta and threw five innings with 10 strikeouts, allowing one unearned run. The Cubs won that game off the Braves bullpen.
Daniel Murphy, who faced Foltynewicz quite a bit when he was in the N.L. East, is 9-for-22 lifetime with three doubles.
Today’s game is on WGN. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Chicago and Atlanta markets).

The 2018 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2017. Here’s how it works.
You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
