Preliminary AFL rosters were released Thursday.

The Chicago Cubs are likely headed for play this October to compete for a World Series championship, but other players in the Cubs organization will also be playing October baseball as well.

That will be in the Arizona Fall League, a Phoenix-area showcase for teams’ best prospects.

Thursday, preliminary rosters were released for AFL teams. There will likely be other players added later, but the big news is that this year’s Cubs No. 1 draft pick out of Stanford, Nico Hoerner, will play in the AFL.

Hoerner suffered an elbow injury playing for South Bend in July, but he’s now considered healthy enough to play in the AFL, which begins play Tuesday, October 9.

Other Cubs named to the roster of the Mesa Solar Sox today were infielder Trent Giambrone, outfielder D.J. Wilson and catcher P.J. Higgins. Normally, MLB teams send six or seven players to the AFL, so I’d expect other names to be added later.

This year’s Solar Sox will consist of players from the Cubs, Tigers, Red Sox, Athletics and Angels. Here’s the complete preliminary roster.

Two AFL games will be televised, as usual: The “Fall Stars” Game, the AFL All-Star Game, on Saturday, November 3, and the league’s championship game on Saturday, November 17, both on MLB Network.
