I’ve been in this town so long that back in the city I’ve been taken for lost and gone and unknown for a long, long time.
- It was the non-tender deadline for MLB on Monday and here’s a list and a short bio of all 56 players who were not offered contracts by their teams for the 2020 season.
- If you just want the highlights, here are the ten of the most important ones.
- Andrew Simon has nine non-tendered players with a chance to make a big impact with a new team in 2020.
- R.J. Anderson has the winners and losers from the non-tender deadline.
- Craig Edwards has five things we learned about the current state of the game from the non-tender deadline.
- Richard Justice explains what’s up currently with the top seven free agents.
- The Yankees plan to meet with free agent pitchers Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg this week.
- Bob Nightengale reports that the White Sox are making a major push to sign free agent pitcher Zack Wheeler.
- We have one major free agent signing as the Reds have signed infielder Mike Moustakas to a four-year, $64 million deal.
- Craig Edwards likes the deal and thinks it gets the Reds close to being a playoff contender.
- Keith Law, on the other hand, thinks the Reds overpaid for Moustakas and that he’s a particularly bad fit in Cincinnati. (ESPN+ sub. req.) He is glad that Moustakas got a multiyear deal, at least.
- The Marlins acquired infielder Jonathan Villar from the Orioles. The Orioles had placed Villar on waivers rather than tender him a contract.
- The Athletics dealt infielder Jurickson Profar to the Padres. If only he hadn’t gotten hurt in Texas . . .
- Left-handed reliever Jake Diekman signed a two-year deal to stay in Oakland.
- The Giants non-tendered left-hander Tyler Anderson but he re-signed with San Francisco on a one-year deal.
- Free agent infielder Ryan Zimmerman says he’ll either re-sign with the Nationals or retire.
- Pitcher Josh Lindblom plans to return from Korea’s KBO and sign with a MLB team at the Winter Meetings.
- Two Japanese players, right-handed pitcher Shun Yamaguchi and second baseman Ryosuke Kikuchi, have been posted.
- Jeff Passan has a list of players who could get dealt this winter. Pretty much every desirable Cub except Javier Baez is on the list.
- Mike Rosenbaum has ten teams with the top prospects needed to make a blockbuster deal this winter.
- Tom Verducci argues that the new rules about restricting pitching changes are dumb and will likely make games longer.
- Former major leaguer Lars Anderson reveals what it feels like to play baseball while taking Adderall. (The Athletic sub. req.)
- Alex Rubenstein and Jon Bois demonstrate that the rise of Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has demolished belief in the “win” statistic.
- Hannah Keyser begs for us not to get cynical or buy into the narratives of either side of baseball’s upcoming labor war.
- Peter Dreier and Steve Rosenthal argue that it is past time that former union head Marvin Miller be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Of course, Miller said he didn’t want to be inducted posthumously when he was alive.
- And finally, what could be a better way to finish up with some adorable photos of Indians outfielder Franmil Reyes’ new baby in Indians gear.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
