Cubs vs. Padres at Mesa and vs. Dodgers at Glendale preview, Monday 2/25, 2:05 CT

It’s the first split squad day of 2019 spring training.

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

MESA, Arizona — Today, we begin to see pitchers who will be in the Cubs’ expected five-man rotation this year, with Jon Lester taking his first turn. I’d expect him to throw two innings in this outing. And, as per usual, only about half of the regulars will play, and likely for only about half the game.

Since it’s Monday, I would expect a somewhat smaller crowd at Sloan Park than for the opener Saturday, even though we are finally returning to better weather in the Valley — partly sunny and 67 today.

Here are today’s particulars.

Cubs lineup at Mesa vs. Padres:

Heyward RF, Descalso 2B, Bryant DH, Baez SS, Contreras C, Evans 3B, Court 1B, Burks LF, Wilson CF

“Wilson” is Cubs prospect D.J. Wilson, the team’s fourth-round pick in 2015. Also remember that the batting order in these lineups does not reflect what you’ll see during the season. Rather, this early in spring training they are set so that the major leaguers are at the top of the lineup, so they’ll get the most at-bats before they leave the game in the middle innings.

Padres lineup:

Jankowski RF, Urias SS, Myers LF, Cordero CF, Mejia DH, Pirela 1B, Potts 3B, Quiroz 2B, Stewart C

Cubs lineup at Glendale vs. Dodgers:

Giambrone 2B, Adames SS, Happ CF, Schwarber DH, Balaguert 1B, Field LF, Arcia C, Cardona RF, Young 3B

Dodgers lineup:

Pederson LF, Turner 3B, Hernandez SS, Barnes C, Orlando RF, Beaty 1B, Peters CF, Smith DH, Lux 2B

As noted above, Jon Lester will start for the Cubs at Mesa. Other pitchers scheduled in Mesa: Brian Duensing, Randy Rosario, Brandon Kintzler, Duane Underwood Jr. and George Kontos.

Nick Margevicius will go for the Padres. Brett Kennedy will follow.

Christian Bergman will start for the Cubs at Glendale. Other Cubs pitchers scheduled in Glendale: Kyle Ryan, Ian Clarkin, Rob Zastryzny and Rob Scahill.

Ross Stripling will go for the Dodgers.

Today’s game vs. the Padres at Mesa is on cubs.com. The game vs. the Dodgers at Glendale is an online-only MLB.com telecast with the Dodgers announcing crew that will be available via MLB.tv.

MLB.com Gameday for Cubs/Padres

Please note that during spring training, Gameday doesn’t usually go pitch-by-pitch as it does during the regular season -- usually, it will update after each at-bat.

Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Please visit our SB Nation Padres site Gaslamp Ball and Dodgers site True Blue LA. If you do go there to interact with Padres or Dodgers fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.

Note that there will be only one StoryStream for both of today’s games, as they start at the same time.

For spring-training games, we’ll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today, that will be 2 p.m. CT and 3:30 p.m. CT.

These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked ”Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page. There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher boxes and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
