Some updates on some injured Cubs players from beat writer Jordan Bastian:
Infielder David Bote was still under evaluation on Monday after being hit in the helmet by a Bumgarner pitch the day before. There’s a chance he’ll be cleared for baseball activity on Tuesday with the goal of returning to game action by Wednesday at the earliest. But, that’s not set in stone. As of right now, though, Bote hasn’t been diagnosed with a concussion. Stay tuned.
Lefty Mike Montgomery is slated to get back on a mound Tuesday. He’ll probably have one more bullpen after that before transitioning to live BP. He’s slightly behind due to a bout with left shoulder stiffness, but not so far behind that his Opening Day status is at risk. No alarms sounding on that front.
Sounds like both of these guys will be fine, just taking it slow with them early in spring training.
Here are today’s particulars.
Heyward RF, Bryant 3B, Rizzo 1B, Baez DH, Schwarber LF, Descalso 2B, Almora CF, Russell SS, Caratini C
It’s the first game for Addison Russell at Sloan Park this spring, as well as the first appearance at Sloan for Anthony Rizzo and Albert Almora Jr., and the first time we’ll see a nine-man lineup where all nine will likely be on the 25-man Opening Day roster.
Brito CF, Tomlinson 3B, Flores 2B, Walker 1B, Souza DH, Avila C, Tomas RF, Chisholm SS, Refsnyder LF
Yu Darvish will start for the Cubs. Other Cubs pitchers scheduled today, in alphabetical order: Alberto Baldonado, Craig Brooks, Matt Carasiti, Carlos Ramirez, Rowan Wick and Mike Zagurski, the same group that threw in Mesa on Saturday.
Zack Godley will go for the D-backs.
Today’s game is on cubs.com. No TV today.
Please note that during spring training, Gameday doesn’t usually go pitch-by-pitch as it does during the regular season -- usually, it will update after each at-bat.
Please visit our SB Nation Diamondbacks site AZ Snakepit. If you do go there to interact with D-backs fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
For spring-training games, we’ll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today, that will be 2 p.m. CT and 3:30 p.m. CT.
These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked ”Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page. There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher boxes and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
