MESA, Arizona — A bit more on Tyler Chatwood and his relief appearance Saturday from Jordan Bastian:
In the fourth inning, when Hendricks slipped into a one-out situation with runners on first and second, the Cubs summoned Chatwood from the bullpen. He had logged two other relief appearances this spring, but this marked his first time entering with inherited runners.
”You can’t have clean innings all the time,” Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy said. “So, we’re trying to start simulating some more game-type situations for everybody.”
Smart move on the Cubs’ part. This is one reason why spring game results often don’t mean anything. The games are simply not played the way a regular-season game would be played, from lineups to replacements to strategies, teams are trying things out. In this case, it seemed to have provided useful innings for Chatwood.
Here are today’s particulars.
Cubs lineup:
Zobrist 2B, Baez SS, Rizzo 1B, Bryant 3B, Schwarber LF, Heyward RF, Almora CF, Caratini C, Quintana P
Another very regular-season lineup look.
Rockies lineup:
Hampson SS, Desmond CF, Murphy DH, Reynolds 1B, Dahl LF, Valaika 3B, McMahon 2B, Cuevas RF, Wolters C
Today is the fourth game in which a Cubs starting pitcher will bat (they are 1-for-3 so far). No Cubs opponent has yet put a pitcher in the batting lineup this spring.
Jose Quintana will start for the Cubs. Cubs relievers today: Steve Cishek, Brandon Kintzler, Brian Duensing and Kyle Ryan.
Chad Bettis goes for the Rockies. Other Rockies pitchers scheduled today: Scott Oberg, Mike Dunn, Harrison Musgrave and Carlos Estevez.
TV today! This game is on NBC Sports Chicago. There will also be an audio webcast on cubs.com.
Please note that during spring training, Gameday doesn’t usually go pitch-by-pitch as it does during the regular season — usually, it will update after each at-bat.
Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.
Please visit our SB Nation Rockies site Purple Row. If you do go there to interact with Rockies fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
For spring-training games, we’ll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today, that will be 3 p.m. CT and 4:30 p.m. CT.
These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked ”Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page. There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher boxes and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
