I went to the ballpark for the first time all season tonight, so I was going to tell you that I couldn’t tell you much about the Cubs system but if you wanted to know something about the Nationals or Athletics system, I have some thoughts. But it turns out, I barely missed anything.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs hammered the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 10-4.
Starter Colin Rea went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, including one solo home run. Rea struck out four and did not walk anyone.
Brian Duensing took over for Rea in the seventh and gave up a run to tie the game at 4-4. Duensing would get the win when Iowa struck back for six runs in the top of the eighth. The final line on Duensing was one run on three hits over 1.1 innings. He did not have a strikeout or a walk.
It was a non-save situation, but Dillon Maples retired the last five batters of the game in order, striking out three. Maples threw 24 pitches, 15 of which were strikes. More games like that one, please.
Center fielder Johnny Field was the big hero for the I-Cubs in tonight’s game. Field hit his first home run of the season with the bases empty in the third inning. He followed that up with a bases-loaded, three-run double in the eighth. Field was 2 for 5. He had the four RBI and he scored twice.
Right fielder Zach Borenstein also had a big two-run single in that six-run top of the eighth. Borenstein was 3 for 5 with three RBI and one run scored.
Shortstop Dixon Machado continued his hot start to the season by going 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored once and had one run batted in.
Left fielder Wynton Bernard hit an RBI triple in the sixth inning and then scored on a Francisco Arcia single. Bernard 2 for 5.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies game with the Jackson Generals was suspended in the third inning with the Smokies leading 2-1. They’ll finish the game sometime between May 1 and May 5.
