Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were sidetracked by the San Antonio Missions (Brewers), 4-3.
Starter Matt Swarmer had a textbook “quality start,” but he got the loss anyway. Swarmer gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. One of the hits was a solo home run. Swarmer struck out an impressive nine batters and only walked one.
Left fielder Donnie Dewees was 2 for 3 with one run batted in.
Here are the highlights from Sunday’s 15-run first inning.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 grilling of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins).
Zach Hedges picked up his first win of the season after allowing just one run on four hits voer 6.1 innings. Hedges struck out six and walked just one.
Wyatt Short threw a perfect bottom of the ninth and got the save. Short did not strike anyone out.
The Smokies scored the six runs on just six hits, thanks in part to six walks. Third baseman Robel Garcia was 1 for 4 with a double and a walk. Garcia scored twice.
Second baseman Vimael Machin went 0 for 1 with three walks. He scored one run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were shut out by the Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers), 3-0. It was the Pelican’s fifth-straight loss.
Bryan Hudson allowed a run in the first inning and a solo home run in the second and that was more than enough for the Wood Ducks. Hudson pitched three innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked no one.
The Pelicans had just three hits tonight. Right fielder Jimmy Herron was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.
