Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans comeback came short and they were locked up by the Frederick Keys (Orioles), 6-5.
Javier Assad gave up his first runs since April 27 (three straight scoreless starts coming into today) when he got rocked for six runs on a pair of three-run home runs in the third inning. Assad’s final line was six runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings. He walked two and struck out one.
DH Tyler Payne hit a three-run home run in the third inning, his second of the season. Payne went 1 for 4.
The Pelicans staged a comeback after there were two outs in the top of the ninth. Kevonte Mitchell had an RBI double, scoring Luke Reynolds. Then Carlos Sepulveda singled Mitchell home. But pinch-hitter Grant Fennell then struck out to end the game.
Catcher Miguel Amaya was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored on the Payne home run.
Right fielder Jimmy Herron went 2 for 4 and also scored on the Payne home run.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were shut out by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 1-0.
Cam Sanders was the hard-luck loser. Sanders gave up one run on just two hits over five innings. Sanders walked four and struck out four.
South Bend had four hits tonight. Catcher Rafelin Lorenzo and first baseman Tyler Durna were both 1 for 3 with a double.
