Cubs are 20-7 this season when their starting pitcher outlasts opposing team's starter

The Cubs' 6-5 loss to the Reds on Friday was only the 7th game this season that the Cubs lost when their starting pitcher lasted longer than the opponent's starter.

Through their 49 games, Cubs starters have pitched more innings than opposing starters in 27 games, with the Cubs winning 20 of them.

Cubs and opponents' starters have pitched exactly the same number of innings in 5 games, of which the Cubs won 3 and lost 2.

So, when Cubs starters have worked at least as deep into a game as their opposite numbers, the Cubs are 23-9.

But when Cubs starters depart earlier than the opposing starter, the Cubs are just 6-11.

..........

Here is the breakdown of all the Cubs’ wins and losses by how the Cubs’ starter performed:

Cubs starter more innings and won: 20

Cubs starter less innings and won: 6

Cubs starter same innings and won: 3

Cubs starter more innings and lost: 7

Cubs starter less innings and lost: 11

Cubs starter same innings and lost: 2

..........

Through 49 games, Cubs starters have pitched 275.0 innings, an average of just under 5.2 innings per start.

Opposing starters have pitched 247.2 innings, or just over 5.0 innings per start.

..........

In their 29 wins, Cubs starters have pitched 177 innings, an average of 6.10 innings.

In their 20 losses, Cubs starters have pitched 98 innings, an average of only 4.90 innings.

So, in their wins, Cubs starters have pitched more than 1 additional inning than they have in their losses.

..........

The Cubs are 1-0 when their starter goes 9 innings.

They are 3-0 when he goes 8 innings.

They are 7-0 when he goes 7 innings.

(All 11 of those starts were complete innings)

They are 8-5 when he goes 6.0-6.2 innings.

They are 6-8 when he goes 5.0-5.2 innings.

They are 3-5 when he goes 4.0-4.2 innings.

They are 0-1 when he goes 3.0-3.2 innings.

They are 1-1 when he goes 2.0-2.2 innings.

..........

So, the Cubs are 11-0 when a starter completes at least 7 innings.

They are 19-5 when a starter completes at least 6 innings.

But they are just 10-15 when a starter does not manage to finish the sixth inning.

The Cubs have had 24 starts of 6 innings or more, and 25 starts of fewer than 6 innings.

..........

The longest start against the Cubs this season was 8.0 innings by Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals on May 18.

Jose Urena of the Marlins pitched 7.0 innings on May 18.

Thirteen opposing starters have pitched 6.0-6.2 innings.

Cubs starters thus have pitched at least 6 innings 24 times, while opposing starters have done so only 15 times.

..........

Only once all season have the Cubs' and opponents' starter both pitched at least 7 innings. It happened May 8, when Kyle Hendricks pitched 8.0 innings for the Cubs and Urena pitched 7.0 for the Marlins. Neither gained a decision, as the Cubs won the game, 3-2, in 11 innings, on Jason Heyward's walk-off home run.

In 2 games, the Cubs' starter went 7.0 innings and the opponents' went 6.1.

In 1 other game, the Cubs' starter lasted 7.0 and the opponents' lasted 6.0.

..........

Cubs starters have failed to pitch 5 full innings 12 times, with a low of 2.0 innings, which happened twice. One of those games was the home opener on April 8, in which Jon Lester was injured running the bases and could not continue on the mound.

Opposing starters did not complete 5 full innings 18 times, including one start of 1.2, another of 2.0 and a third of 2.2.
