Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were scratched by the Sacramento River Cats (Giants), 7-6 in ten innings.
Matt Swarmer gave up three runs in the bottom of the first, but then he settled down and pitched well after that. Swarmer’s final line was four runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out nine and walked just one.
The Cubs took a 6-5 lead in the top of the tenth on a Robel Garcia double, but Randy Rosario couldn’t hold the lead in the bottom of the inning, surrendering a two-run walk-off double to Ryan Howard. (No, not that Ryan Howard. That one is retired.) Rosario gave up two runs on two hits and a walk over a third of an inning. The runner that started the inning on second base scored an unearned run, as they all are in that situation.
First baseman Trent Giambrone hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his 12th of the year and his second in as many nights. Giambrone was 2 for 5.
Right fielder Mark Zagunis came of the injured list and hit a pair of doubles in a 2 for 5 outing. Those two doubles drove in three runs between them.
Left fielder Wynton Bernard was 2 for 4 with a double.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies reeled in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Twins), 2-1.
Thomas Hatch won his second-straight start after giving up just one run on six hits over six innings. Hatch walked one and struck out five.
Wyatt Short pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth for his fifth save. Short struck out two.
P.J. Higgins drove in both runs tonight. He singled home Robert Caro in the sixth inning and he had an RBI groundout that scored Caro in the fourth. Higgins was 1 for 4.
Caro was 2 for 3 with a walk.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans downed the Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers), 3-1. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Pelicans.
Starter Alexander Vargas got his first win of the year after allowing just one run on four hits over five innings. Vargas walked one and struck out four.
Jesus Camargo entered the game with a man on first and two outs in the eighth inning. He retired the first batter he faced on a fly out to end the eighth inning and then got three more fly outs in order to end the game in the ninth. It was his second save.
DH Kevonte Mitchell went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI single in the first inning.
First baseman Tyler Payne was 2 for 4.
South Bend Cubs
South Bend was winning 5-0 in the fourth inning at West Michigan when the rains came. Since the first half ends tomorrow and this game has no impact on the standings, it was cancelled and will not be finished.
Eugene Emeralds
The Eugene Emeralds were shut out by the HIllsboro Hops (Diamondbacks), 4-0.
Kohl Franklin started and took the loss. Franklin allowed just one run on four hits over 3.2 innings. Franklin walked three and struck out five.
