Congratulations to Iowa Cubs pitcher Alec Mills, who was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week. He made two starts and went 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA.
Also, Iowa second baseman Trent Giambrone made the MLB Pipeline Team of the Week, for obvious reasons.
The rookie ball Arizona League started today. Generally I just provide a link to the box scores for the two AZL teams, although I will comment if something unusual happened in those games.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs beat the Sacramento River Cats (GIants), 10-8.
Trevor Clifton started and he got the win despite allowing three home runs. The final line on Clifton was four runs on six hits over five innings. Clifton struck out five and walked one batter intentionally.
Craig Brooks was tasked with preserving a 10-5 lead in the bottom of the ninth, but he gave up two runs and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, so Randy Rosario was summoned from the pen for the save. He struck out the only batter he faced to end the game.
Second baseman Trent Giambrone homered in his fourth-straight game today when he connected for a two-run home run in the fifth. It was Giambrone’s 14th home run of the year. Giambrone went 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored twice.
Donnie Dewees gave the I-Cubs two insurance runs (that ended up being necessary) when he hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth.
Center fielder Ian Happ was 2 for 5. He had one run batted in and one run scored.
First baseman Jim Adduci went 2 for 5. He scored twice and had one RBI.
Third baseman Phillip Evans was 2 for 5.
Catcher Erick Castillo went 1 for 2 with a double and three walks. Castillo had three RBI (two-run double and a bases-loaded walk) and he scored twice.
