Cubs roster moves: Alec Mills recalled, Martin Maldonado added to 25-man roster

The Cubs made the move for tonight’s starter, and to add the newest trade acquisition.

Alec Mills was obtained from the Royals for Donnie Dewees before the 2017 season. Dewees is back now, playing for Iowa, so that’s already a minor win.

Mills made two starts for the 2018 Cubs and five relief appearances. One of the starts was good, the other not so much.

He’s being recalled from Triple-A Iowa (where he’s posted a 4.73 ERA in 15 games) to start tonight’s game, and Martin Maldonado, acquired by trade for Mike Montgomery late Monday, has also been added to the 25-man roster, per a press release from the Cubs.

As noted by various writers on Twitter late Monday evening, Willson Contreras is heading to the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sunday) with a sore right foot. It’s hoped that Contreras won’t be out much more than the minimum 10 days. In the meantime, Maldonado and Victor Caratini will handle catching duties,

With the trade of Montgomery for Maldonado, the 40-man roster remains full, for the moment, anyway.

Whether Mills gets more chances to start (likely, until Cole Hamels is ready to return) probably depends, at least in part, on how he throws tonight against the Reds.

Mills previously wore No. 24, but that's now taken by Craig Kimbrel, so Mills will wear No. 30. Maldonado will take over Montgomery's No. 38.
