Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were tripped by the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 13-4.
Starter Trevor Clifton got rocked for eight runs on seven hits in just three innings. Three of those seven hits were home runs and two of them were hit by catcher Will Smith. Smith’s home run in the second inning was a grand slam. Clifton walked four and struck out four. One of the eight runs was unearned.
Carl Edwards Jr. pitched an inning in a rehab assignment. Edwards loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk, but he struck out the other three batters he faced in the inning, so no runs were scored.
Left fielder Donnie Dewees hit a solo home run in the third inning, his 13th home run of the season. Dewees went 1 for 4.
Right fielder Mark Zagunis went 2 for 4 with a double.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were caught hibernating by the Mobile BayBears (Angels), 8-3.
Starter Erick Leal took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. One of the three runs was unearned. Leal walked four and struck out eight.
Jake Stinnett allowed five runs in the seventh inning, which put the game out of reach.
Catcher Jhonny Pereda went 3 for 4 with a double. He scored once and had one run batted in.
Center fielder Nico Hoerner went 2 for 5 with a double and one run scored.
There’s been some bad blood between these two teams as this six-game series came to an end today with the Smokies winning just two of them.
