Earlier this week, the Cubs traded Mike Montgomery to the Royals for Martin Maldonado . That deal has paid immediate dividends; even though Maldonado has yet to record his first hit, he’s played solid defense and showed off excellent pitch-framing skills.

In this week’s SB Nation FanPulse survey, the overwhelming majority of members said the Cubs should still be buyers before the trading deadline:

This isn’t surprising. The Cubs do still have a couple of areas in which they could improve by adding a player. A left-handed reliever is on the wish list, as well as another bat, presumably an outfielder. There are just 11 days remaining until this year’s single trade deadline, so Theo Epstein & Co. have work yet to do.

For the other two questions asked every week in the FanPulse survey, approval of manager Joe Maddon jumped this week from 76 percent to 86 percent, and confidence in the team’s performance soared from 41 percent to 73 percent. That’s what a sweep of the Pirates will do for you (the survey was sent out early this week, during the Reds series).
