Derek Holland was acquired by the Cubs Friday for cash considerations. (Someday I hope there’s a MLB player actually named “Cash Considerations.”)
Today, he’s being added to the active roster:
Daniel Descalso to IL with sprained left ankle. Holland added to roster

Daniel Descalso has been placed on the 10-day injured list to make room for Holland on the active roster. Descalso hasn’t hit well this season and some of the bad hitting, according to Jesse Rogers’ tweet, could be related to the ankle injury he suffered in early May, although it strains credulity to some extent to think that ankle is still “sprained,” given that Descalso has barely played at all this month and just twice in the field. Hopefully he can get some rehab assignment time and perhaps help the team in September.
In addition to being very tough against lefthanded hitters this year (.182/.276/.195 with just one extra-base hit), Holland has significant postseason experience, all with the Rangers, including pitching in the World Series in 2010 and 2011.
