Good morning.
- So the first big trade of the deadline happened on Tuesday as the Indians sent pitcher Trevor Bauer to the Reds in exchange for outfielder Yasiel Puig. The Padres were also involved in this deal as they sent Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and a prospect to Cleveland for Reds prospect Taylor Trammell.
- Dan Szymborski breaks down this three-way deal.
- News of the deal had already leaked but hadn’t reached the Reds dugout when this melee between the Reds and the Pirates started as Reds reliever Amir Garrett went after the Pirates dugout with fists flying. Puig was in the middle of the scrum and was ejected in his last act as a Red, along with Garrett. Trevor Williams, Francisco Cervelli, Chris Archer and Kyle Crick were ejected for the Pirates.
- Bill Baer, while definitely not exonerating Garrett, looks at the history of the past five years and argues that the Pirates are looking to start fights. Yeah, I’d agree with that.
- The Pirates bullpen coach was suspended by the team for two days in what was termed a “contract violation.” It’s the second bullpen suspension for the Pirates in the past few weeks.
- And Bauer’s last act as an Indian was that throwing of a ball over the center field fence, for which he was fined by MLB.
- The Pirates traded pitcher Jordan Lyles to the Brewers, which makes this the second-straight deadline that the Brewers traded for Lyles. Dan Szymborski evaluates the deal.
- The Braves acquired relief pitcher Chris Martin in exchange for pitcher Kolby Allard.
- New Met Marcus Stroman was reportedly very unhappy when he was told that he’d been traded to the Mets and it resulted in an incident in the Blue Jays clubhouse. (That’s actually a natural reaction to being told you’ve been traded to the Mets.) Since then, Stroman has said that he’s happy to be a Met, going so far as to post of picture of himself taken when he was a young child in a Mets jacket.
- Wallace Matthews has more on Stroman, his relationship with the Mets and the Blue Jays and what went on in the Blue Jays clubhouse. Matthews says that all is good between the Mets and Stroman, for now at least.
- And some anonymous “Blue Jays executive” took some pot shots in the media at Stroman as he went out the door, which says more about the Blue Jays front office than it does about Stroman. He’s not your responsibility any more. Just let it go.
- Brittany Ghiroli gets eight members of the Nationals to tell their story about what happened when they got traded in their career. (The Athletic sub. req.)
- Jay Jaffe doesn’t understand why the Mets traded for Stroman anymore than Marcus does. He does think the Mets got a good pitcher, although not one particularly suited to pitch for the Mets as they stand currently.
- Here’s some predictions about what’s going to happen before 4 pm Eastern today.
- Jon Tayler thinks the trade deadline has been boring for the same reasons the off-season free agent and trade markets were boring. He wrote this before the Bauer/Puig deal. I don’t know if he still thinks that.
- Jesse Yomtov explains why and how Deadline Day is different this year.
- Former Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd reveals what it is like to be a general manager on deadline day.
- Michael Shapiro looks at where the Mets might trade pitcher Noah Syndergaard, if they do decide to deal him.
- Syndergaard is one of Michael Baumann’s four falling dominoes that could determine the shape of Deadline Day. (Although Trevor Bauer is another, so it’s a tiny bit out-of-date.)
- Bob Nightengale has six teams that need to make a deal today.
- The Red Sox are looking at “lesser” names for a bullpen acquisition.
- Jonathan Mayo lists which contenders have the big-value prospects necessary to pull of a monster deal.
- Blue Jays closer Ken Giles got a cortisone shot, which can’t help his trade value.
- Eric Longenhagen and Riley McDaniel look at teams that will have a crunch on their 40-man roster this winter that might impact their ability to make a deal at the deadline.
- Hannah Keyser is very excited about the Giants big turnaround this season and says that the Giants make her believe in magic against her better judgement again.
- Tony Wolfe examines the comeback season of Reds pitcher Sonny Gray.
- Iowa Cubs all-time career saves leader Blake Parker has signed with the Phillies and Rian Watt tells the Philadelphia Phaithful what to expect.
- Nationals ace Max Scherzer went on the injured list with what is being called a “mild rhomboid strain.” Who knew you could go on the IL for failing geometry.
- Sad news as Loek van Mil, the tallest man to ever play professional baseball at 7’1”, has died after an accident. He was only 34.
- Presented without comment: A ten-year-old boy was shot with a stray bullet at a Lehigh Valley IronPigs game.
- The Athletics don’t have any terrestrial radio broadcasts this year and have gone to online broadcasts only. Steve Berman explains how the success of this project has the rest of MLB intrigued. (The Athletic sub. req.)
- Mets rookie slugger Pete Alonso is speaking up against bullying. Alonso said he was bullied a lot as a kid and still feels the impact of that today.
- And finally, Reds shortstop Jose Iglesias said he’d dye his hair if he hit a home run on Monday, Well, he hit one so he did. Then he said he’d dye his hair again if he hit one on Tuesday. So he homered again. Pretty soon he’s going to have a rainbow wig for hair.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
