Cubs roster move: David Phelps added to 25-man roster, Duane Underwood Jr. optioned to Iowa

The Cubs will have a new reliever available tonight in St. Louis.

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday, the Cubs acquired righthander David Phelps from the Blue Jays in exchange for minor-league RHP Tom Hatch.

Phelps was added to the 40-man roster Tuesday; to make room, lefthanded reliever Xavier Cedeno was transferred to the 60-day injured list. I suspect we have seen the last of Cedeno in a Cubs uniform.

Today, Phelps was added to the 25-man active roster:

Duane Underwood Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Iowa Tuesday when Pedro Strop was placed on the injured list, but did not appear in Tuesday night’s game in St. Louis. He’ll likely be called up again in September.

Here’s hoping David Phelps can complete his mission and provide some good middle relief help, something this Cubs team desperately needs.

Earlier Wednesday, in case you missed it, the Cubs traded catcher Martin Maldonado to the Astros for infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp. As noted above, Kemp will arrive in St. Louis after batting practice and likely will be activated tomorrow.
