I just wanted a picture of those sweet Expos uniforms.
- Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco went on the IL in early June and now we know why. Carrasco announced that he has leukemia.
- Here’s some good news. Carrasco has been cleared to resume baseball activities as he can tolerate them. Carrasco says he wants to pitch again this year but the Indians say they don’t have a timetable for his return.
- Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy had to be carted off the field after colliding with the Astros’ Jake Marisnick. Marisnick was ruled out for leaving the baseline to collide with Lucroy.
- Angels manager Brad Ausmus thinks Marisnick should be suspended. Marisnick didn’t apologize, but he did say he felt “awful” that Lucroy got hurt.
- It was a bad weekend for Phillies pitcher Jake Arrieta. Not only did he get the loss in Saturday’s game with the Mets after allowing five runs in 4⅓ innings, it was revealed that he was diagnosed with a bone spur that may need season-ending surgery.
- Arrieta also said that if Mets third baseman Todd Frazier didn’t want to get hit by a pitch, “he can come and see me and I’ll put a dent in his skull.” Frazier, for his part, said that Arrieta went “a little overboard” with his comments. Ya think?
- Blake Schuster looks at where the Phillies go from here with Arrieta’s uncertain situation.
- Also, Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera has been suspended for the rest of the season for violating the domestic violence policy. The suspension is retroactive and will be 85 games in length.
- There was yet another earthquake in Southern California during Friday night’s Dodgers/Padres game. (And yes, I felt it. Both of them and some of the lesser tremors as well.) The players played right through the quake like it wasn’t even happening.
- As Pedro Moura reports, they kept playing through it because they didn’t know it was happening. (The Athletic sub. req.) They knew something was going on with the crowd, however, who did feel the stadium shake and made a lot of noise.
- Here’s what the earthquake looked like on both the Dodgers and Padres broadcasts.
- Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen threw a chair in a meeting with the Mets coaching staff after a loss.
- Pitchers Masahiro Tanaka, Felipe Vazquez and Brandon Woodruff have all been added to the All-Star Game rosters.
- Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon will miss his first All-Star Game to rest his injured legs. But Rendon is discussing a possible contract extension with the Nationals. Rendon can become a free agent at the end of the season.
- David Aldridge explains why the Nationals cannot let Rendon leave DC. (The Athletic sub. req.)
- Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli says he’s done catching after suffering his sixth concussion.
- Tony Wolfe notes that Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has been destroying sliders this season after struggling badly against them earlier in his career.
- It was the Futures Game yesterday and Tim Brown used the occasion to ask these incredibly-talented young men about what they’re bad at. He got several “singing” answers.
- The Nationals weren’t the only ones to go with throwback uniforms (see photo) this past weekend. The Reds went with sleeveless vest unis this weekend.
- The city of Kansas City got a grant to restore the house of baseball Hall-of-Famer Satchel Paige.
- And finally, Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton scored all the way from first base on a double to give the Nats a 3-2 lead over the Nationals and pitcher Max Scherzer ran out of the dugout to congratulate his teammate on scoring the winning run. Unfortunately for Scherzer, it was only the bottom of the eighth inning. In Scherzer’s defense, his wife gave birth on Thursday and he was probably operating on no sleep.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster. Congratulations, USWNT. You deserved it.
