A light schedule today as MLB would prefer there not be other games opposite the All-Star Game. Sometimes the minor leagues accommodate their wishes. Sometimes they don’t.
Iowa Cubs
In their All-Star Break. Colin Rea will represent the Iowa Cubs in tomorrow night’s Triple-A All-Star Game in El Paso.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were served up by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 4-3.
Starter Cory Abbott took the loss after giving up four runs on just three hits over 5.1 innings. One of those hits was a two-run home run. Abbott battled control problems as he walked four and struck out three.
Catcher P.J. Higgins went 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Shortstop Vimael Machin went 2 for 3 with two walks and one run batted in.
Right fielder Connor Myers went 2 for 3 with one run scored.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans flew past the Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers), 5-3.
Erich Uelmen turned in a strong performance and was rewarded with his third win of the season. Uelmen allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits over six innings. Uelmen struck out seven and walked just one.
Manuel Rodriguez came in to pitch the ninth and get the save. He quickly retired the first two batters, but then he walked one, gave up an RBI single and then put runners on second and third with a two-out double. Rodriguez then nailed down the save with a groundout to third.
Center fielder Jimmy Herron went 2 for 3 with a walk and his 19th steal of the season. Herron singled home Delvin Zinn in the sixth inning give the Pelicans a 3-2 lead. He scored another run later in the sixth.
Zinn went 1 for 3 with an RBI double, a walk and a stolen base.
DH Cam Balego hit his ninth home run of the year in the second inning to give the Pelicans an early 1-0 lead. Balego went 1 for 3 with a walk.
Left fielder Zach Davis went 2 for 4 with a stolen base. He scored once.
