Cubs lefthanded reliever Kyle Ryan had been placed on the bereavement list Friday. Players must spend a minimum three days on that list, and now he’s back:

Ryan has turned into one of the most effective relievers in the Cubs bullpen. In 27 appearances since June 5: 1.07 ERA, 0.987 WHIP, scored on in just three of those 27 appearances. Ryan has been very good against LHB (.231/.282/.277, no home runs in 71 PA), but he has also been effective vs. RHB (.218/.298/.317). He hasn’t allowed an earned run since July 21 (nine appearances).
Dillon Maples made one appearance in the three games he was on the active roster and allowed two runs, both solo homers, in a 1⅓-inning outing. You likely know I have an irrational like for Maples, given his slider that is nearly unhittable:

Hopefully he’ll harness his fastball command. He’s likely back on the roster in September.
