Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 16

South Bend and Eugene win as both teams chase a playoff spot.

Marcos Encarnacion, a pitcher for one of the Cubs Dominican Summer League teams, has been suspended 72 games for testing positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing drug. Encarnacion is not considered a top prospect.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were defeated by the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals), 8-2.

Tyson Miller started and took the loss after allowing six runs on ten hits over 4.1 innings. Miller walked two and struck out three.

Trent Giambrone went 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored one run.

Iowa still has a nine-game lead over second-place Memphis after losing the first two games of this four-game series.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were made to feel small by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins), 5-3.

Erich Uelmen started and took the loss. Uelmen gave up five runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. Uelmen walked four and struck out three.

Allen Webster got in one perfect inning in a rehab appearance. Webster struck out one.

Shortstop Nico Hoerner went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were shut out by the Salem Red Sox, 1-0.

Ryan Kellogg was the hard-luck loser in this game. Kellogg allowed just one run on four hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out one.

The Pelicans only had three hits in this game. Center fielder Zac Taylor went 1 for 3.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs capsized the Lake County Captains (Indians), 8-1.

Derek Casey dominated the Captains for seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Casey struck out five and walked one. The one run scored on a solo home run in the fifht inning.

Shortstop Andy Weber had a big game, going 3 for 4 with a double and a walk. Weber scored once and had one run batted in.

Center fielder Cole Roederer went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored one run and drove in one.

Second baseman Jake Slaughter was 2 for 5 with a double. He had one RBI and one run scored.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds stopped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 9-2.

Josh Burgmann allowed just one hit and no runs over the first three innings. Burgmann struck out five and did not walk anyone.

The win went to Blake Whitney, even though he was the only Ems reliever to allow a run. Whitney pitched three innings and gave up two runs on five hits, including a solo home runs. Whitney did strike out six and did not walk anyone.

Alongside Tanner Dalton and Brandon Hughs, Ems pitchers tonight struck out 17 Volcanoes batters and walked just one.

Center fielder Edmond Americaan, went 3 for 4 with a triple and a stolen base. Americaan had one run scored and one RBI.

Catcher Caleb Knight was 3 for 4 with two runs batted in.

AZL Cubs

Cubs 1 lost to the Angels, 7-4 in ten innings.

Cubs 2 were beating Giants Orange, 8-5 in the eighth inning.
