Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were swept by the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals), 14-2.
Adbert Alzolay started and took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits over just four innings. Three of the seven hits were solo home runs. Alzolay walked one and struck out four.
The Redbirds hit five home runs against Iowa pitching in this game.
Daniel Descalso was the third batter of this game and he connected for a two-run home run. It was all downhill for Iowa from there. Descalso went 1 for 1 with a walk.
After being swept by Memphis in this four-game series, Iowa’s lead in the division is down to seven. Iowa’s season ends with a four-game series against Memphis in Des Moines.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies surrendered to the Jackson Generals (Diamondbacks), 3-2.
Starter Jake Stinnett gave up three runs in the third inning and that was all the Generals would need. Stinnett allowed three runs on two hits and a walk over three innings. Stinnett struck out three.
Left fielder Jared Young was 2 for 3 with a walk and one run batted in.
Center fielder Connor Myers was 2 for 4. He drove in Young with a single in the sixth inning.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans swept a doubleheader from the Salem Red Sox, 3-1 and 5-4 in eight innings.
In game one, Bryan Hudson made his first appearance for the Pelicans since April 29. Hudson allowed just one run on one hit and one walk over three innings. Hudson struck out four.
The win went to Erling Moreno, who pitched just one scoreless inning. Moreno gave up a leadoff hit in the fourth inning but erased him in a lineup double play to the first baseman. Moreno did not have a strikeout.
Ethan Roberts threw a perfect seventh inning for the save. He struck out two.
First baseman Luke Reynolds hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Pelicans the lead. Reynolds has eight home runs this year and six for Myrtle Beach. Reynolds went 2 for 2 with a walk.
In game two, starter Alexander Vargas gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings. Vargas did not have a walk or a strikeout.
Jesus Camargo retired all six batters he faced and got the win when the Pelicans scored in the bottom of the eighth. Camargo struck out two.
Carlos Sepulveda singled home Zac Taylor in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off win. Sepulveda was 1 for 3 with a walk. Taylor was 1 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored.
DH Miguel Amaya hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Amaya went 2 for 3 with a walk.
Left fielder Grant Fennell was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI single in the third inning.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs stopped the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 9-5.
Cam Sanders started and got the win. Sanders allowed just two runs on two hits over five innings. One of the two runs was unearned. Sanders walked three and struck out three.
Third baseman Clayton Daniel hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give South Bend an early lead. Daniel went 3 for 5. He scored twice.
In the third inning, second baseman Chase Strumpf hit his first low-A home run with the bases empty. Strumpf went 1 for 2 with a walk, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly. He had two total RBI.
Right fielder Nelson Velazquez hit South Bend’s third home run of the day, a three-run home run in the fifth inning. it was Velazquez’s fourth home run this year and second for South Bend. He was 3 for 5.
DH Nelson Maldonado went 3 for 4 and scored two times.
First baseman Jake Slaughter was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
All nine players in South Bend’s starting lineup had at least one hit.
Eugene Emeralds
The Eugene Emeralds snuck past the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 2-1.
Michael McAvene pitched three scoreless innings to start this game. McAvene gave up two hits and a walk while striking out four.
Yunior Perez and Zach Bryant each pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Matteo Bocchi gave up a run to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth but was in line for the win when the Ems scored in the top of the ninth. Bocchi then pitched the bottom of the ninth to close out the game. Bocchi’s final line was one run on three hits over two innings. Bocchi walked one and struck out three.
Luis Vazquez singled home Ryan Reynolds in the top of the ninth with what proved to be the winning run. Vazquez went 3 for 4 and scored the Ems other run. Reynolds was 1 for 4 in his Eugene debut.
