The Brewers and Cardinals play this weekend. Which team should Cubs fans root for?

That’s a dilemma.

The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will face each other in a three-game series beginning tonight in St. Louis. It will be the final meeting of these two teams for the 2019 season. The Cardinals have won nine and the Brewers seven of the first 16 games they’ve played.

The Cardinals lead the N.L. Central. The Brewers are tied with the Cubs for the second wild-card spot, four games behind St. Louis.

The headline to this post is a bit of a misnomer. As Cubs fans, we don’t really “root” for either one of the teams mentioned. In this case, though, one of them has to lose each game of the series.

I’d think the best-case scenario for the Milwaukee/St. Louis series is a sweep by one of the teams while the Cubs take care of business against the Pirates at Wrigley Field.

If the Cubs sweep the Pirates while the Brewers sweep the Cardinals, the Cubs and Brewers would still be tied for the second wild-card spot... but they’d then both be just one game behind St. Louis.

If the Cubs sweep the Pirates while the Cardinals sweep the Brewers, the Cubs would still be four games out of first place... but then the Cubs would also be three games ahead of Milwaukee for that second wild-card spot.

There are a number of permutations here. Which one would you rather see? (All of these scenarios assume a Cubs sweep of the Pirates.)
