In case you’ve been spending the Sunday out with your friends and family, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo suffered a nasty-looking right ankle injury in the the third inning on Sunday.
That’s an ugly injury, but preliminary x-rays taken at the stadium did not show any broken bones. An MRI is looming on Monday, but it seems impossible that Rizzo won’t miss time with this injury. It would not be a surprise if this injury rules Rizzo out for the rest of the season and even the playoffs.
Ian Happ replaced Rizzo at first base and he seems likely to get the lion’s share of starts in Rizzo’s absence. On the good side, Happ homered off the Pirates’ Yacksel Rios in the fifth inning on Sunday.
As always in a developing story like this one, we will update the story when more information becomes available. But Cubs fans should be braced for the worst in this situation.
